You have no engine. Nothing on your aircraft makes energy, and it only ever spends it. The single thing keeping you in the sky is warm air rising off the ground, so your job is to find enough of it to keep going. Every metre of distance is paid for in height, and height can only be bought back in a thermal.

What Is Glide?

Glide is a soaring game about energy. You fly a sailplane, which is an aircraft with no engine at all, and the only force that can put energy back into your flight is a thermal. A thermal is a column of warm air rising from ground that the sun has heated more than its surroundings. Fly into one and you climb. Fly anywhere else and you sink, slowly and relentlessly, toward the ground.

That leaves you with two numbers that matter. Altitude is how much time you have left. Airspeed is how much control you have left. They are not independent, because you convert one into the other constantly. Push the nose down and you trade height for speed. Pull it up and you trade speed for height. The game is not about avoiding obstacles or hitting targets. It is about managing a budget that only ever goes down unless you go and find more.

How to Play

  1. Take off and get a feel for the sink. Your glider moves forward on its own. Do nothing for a few seconds and watch the altitude meter fall. That is the baseline cost of staying in the air, and everything you do afterwards is measured against it.
  2. Hold up to climb. The nose rises, the glider gains height, and the airspeed meter bleeds downward while you do it. Climbing is not free. It is you spending the speed you built up, and if you spend all of it the wing stops flying.
  3. Hold down to dive. The nose drops, you accelerate hard, and the altitude meter falls much faster than it did when you were gliding level. Diving is how you buy back speed and how you cover ground quickly, but it is also how you run out of height.
  4. Fly into a thermal and stay near its centre. Thermals are the green columns rising from the ground. Inside one you climb without spending speed, which makes them the only place in the game where your energy budget actually improves. The middle lifts harder than the edges, so the few metres either side of centre are worth more than the whole outer half.

Tips for a Longer Flight

  • Never arrive at a thermal low. The most common way to end a flight is to reach the next column of lift with almost no height left, miss the core, and have nothing in reserve to try again. Leave each thermal higher than you think you need to.
  • Climb in the core, not at the edge. A thermal is strongest in the middle. Entering at the edge and drifting through it on the way past gives you a fraction of what the same thermal would have given you if you had committed to the centre.
  • Dive between thermals, glide inside them. This is the single biggest improvement most players can make. When the air is going down, going faster costs you very little extra height and saves real time. When the air is going up, going slower lets you collect more of it.
  • Watch the airspeed meter, not just the altitude meter. A stall is far more dangerous than being low. Low but still flying is recoverable, because you still have a wing. A stall costs you height fast and it does not stop until the speed comes back, which means watching the ground come up while nothing you press makes any difference. Once the needle crosses the red line on the speed meter, the only cure is to push the nose down and wait.
  • Treat the last third of your altitude as unspendable. Below about a third of full height, stop taking risks and start looking for the next thermal immediately. The reserve exists so that a missed approach is an inconvenience rather than the end of the flight.
  • Plan one thermal ahead, not one metre ahead. The gaps widen as you get further out, so the thermal you can see is rarely the one that matters. The one that matters is the next one, and how much height you need to reach it.

What Every Move Costs You

There are only four things you can do in Glide, and each one buys something with something else. Once you can see the price on each, the game stops being about reflexes and becomes a question of what you can afford right now.

Pull up
You gain height and lose speed. Safe while you have speed to spend, and the way you climb in a thermal. Do it with the needle already near the red line and you stall.
Push down
You gain speed and lose height, fast. The right move in sinking air, where the height was going anyway. The wrong move when you are already low.
Fly into a thermal
Free height, and the only income in the game. Costs you the diversion to reach it and the height you burn getting there, which is why a distant thermal is often a bad buy.
Fly straight and level
Costs you height at a steady rate and buys nothing at all. It is the default, and it is never the best thing you could be doing.

What Makes Soaring Work as a Game

Most flying games give you a throttle. A throttle is a very convenient thing to give a player, because it means the aircraft can always recover. If you get into trouble, you add power and the trouble goes away. It also removes almost all of the tension. The moment a player can generate their own energy, the sky stops being something they have to negotiate and becomes a backdrop.

Taking the engine away changes the feeling completely. Without one, height is not a position. It is a currency. You cannot decide to stay up, you can only decide what to spend. That turns every input into a trade rather than a command, and it means the game is always asking a question with no obviously correct answer. Climb now and arrive high but slow? Dive now and arrive fast but low? Both are defensible, and which one is right depends entirely on what is ahead.

The thermals are what stop that from becoming a slow decline into inevitability. They are the only source of new energy, they are scattered unpredictably across the map, and they are strongest in the middle, so finding them is not enough. You also have to fly them well. That combination of a finite budget and a scarce income you have to collect skilfully is what makes the loop worth repeating.

Why the sink rate is the real clock

It is tempting to think of the altitude meter as your timer, but the sink rate is what actually ends the flight. Two flights starting at exactly the same height can last wildly different amounts of time, because how long you stay up depends on how much height you lose per second, not on how much you started with.

That distinction matters because sink rate is not fixed. It grows with speed, and it grows faster than speed does. Doubling your airspeed more than triples the rate at which you are going down. The practical consequence is that flying fast is genuinely expensive in a way that is easy to underestimate. A long dive to reach a distant thermal can cost more height than the thermal can give back. The instrument to watch when you are deciding whether to go for it is not the altimeter. It is the vertical speed you are giving up to get there.

Reading a thermal before you reach it

Thermals are visible from a distance in Glide, which makes the game about judgement rather than reaction. The decision that matters is made well before you arrive. At your current height and speed, can you reach that column with enough altitude left to climb in it?

A useful habit is to pick your target, then ask what happens if you miss the core. If the answer is that you end up on the ground, the correct move is usually to skip that thermal and take a nearer one, even a weaker one, to top up first. Gaining a little height in the wrong place is almost always better than gambling everything on the right place. Distance in this game accumulates from flights that keep going, not from flights that were efficient right up until they ended.

Playing on Phone, Tablet or Desktop

On a keyboard, the up and down arrows are all you need, and W and S work just as well. P pauses, and the pause button in the top bar does the same thing. On a phone or tablet, hold your finger on the top half of the screen to climb and the bottom half to dive. The whole screen is the control, so there is nothing small to aim at.

Soaring rewards a light touch, and that is easier on a larger screen where you can see the shape of the terrain ahead. The fullscreen button in the top bar gives you a bigger view and more warning before a thermal passes, which is worth having on any device. Your best distance is saved in your browser on the device you are playing on, so it will not follow you between them.

Is Glide free to play?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no download, no install and no sign-up, and there is nothing to buy inside it.

Can I play it on a phone?

Yes. Hold the top half of the screen to climb and the bottom half to dive. The controls are the whole screen, so there are no small buttons to find.

Is there a way to win, or does it just end?

There is no finish line. The flight ends when you touch the ground, and your score is the distance you covered before that happened. The only goal is to beat your own best.

Why does my glider suddenly drop?

That is a stall. If your airspeed falls below the point where the wing can still generate lift, the nose drops on its own and you lose height fast until you build speed again. Push the nose down early when the airspeed meter gets close to the red line.

What do the coloured bands on the meters mean?

The altitude meter turns red when you are low enough that a missed thermal is likely to end your flight. On the speed meter, the red line marks the stall speed, so anything below it means the wing is not flying.

Is my best distance saved?

Yes, but only on the device and browser you played in. It is stored locally, so it does not transfer to another phone or computer, and clearing your browser data will reset it.
